The Leibniz Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies e.V. (LIFIS)
was founded on 3 May 2002 - at the suggestion of the Leibniz-Sozietät der Wissenschaften zu Berlin e.V., the scholarly society founded in 1700 by Elector Friedrich III of Brandenburg, later King Friedrich I of Prussia, as the Churbrandenburg Societät der Wissenschaften.
The purpose of LIFIS
is, between science in general, the Leibniz-Sozietät der Wissenschaften zu Berlin e.V. (Leibniz-Sozietät der Wissenschaften zu Berlin e.V.). (Leibniz-Sozietät for short) in particular, as well as other areas of society - primarily small and medium-sized businesses - to initiate and promote practice-relevant relationships.
In view of the increasing complexity of current and future problems, the interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation of science and industry is at the centre of all efforts. LIFIS does not want to be a research institution in the conventional sense, but rather a 'virtual' institution that organizes and coordinates available potentials at other locations, thus constituting networks of appropriate competence.
In keeping with this concern - and thus with the unique selling proposition of LIFIS - the Executive Board and the membership are made up of representatives of both science and industry. Individuals, corporations and supporting members can become members of the institute.
LIFIS is legally independent and is based in Berlin-Adlershof. The institute finances its activities through membership fees, donations and other contributions. Currently, the version of the statutes and the contribution regulations of LIFIS adopted by the general meeting on 14 March 2013 applies.
